Prepare Your Home For A New Season

Phyllis Patterson

Spring is a beautiful time of year, full of sunshine, blooming flowers, and new beginnings. Even though this year’s winter lacked snow days and frigid temperatures, I’m still so happy we are moving away from the winter blues and are getting closer to sundress season! This time of year is the perfect time to refresh your home after a long winter and prepare for the warm months ahead. Here are four things to do each year to prepare your home for spring:

Clean and declutter.

Spring cleaning is a tradition for a reason! Start by decluttering your home and getting rid of anything that you don’t need or use anymore. (Take a look at our estate sale blog posts, part 1 and part 2, for a few hints on what’s worth keeping and what’s best to toss.) Starting with decluttering will make it easier to deep clean your home and give you a fresh start for the season. Make sure to dust and vacuum all surfaces, wash your windows, and clean out your closets and cabinets. Need more help? We love the tips from Go Clean Co!  – read more here and here.

Check for water damage.

Unfortunately, here in Alexandria, we are no strangers to flooding and the damage it can bring to our yards and homes, especially our basements. Springtime can bring plenty of rain (and in past years, melting snow), so it’s important to check your home for any signs of water damage. You should also check your basement or crawlspace for any signs of standing water or moisture. Look for leaks or water stains on your ceilings or walls, and make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of any debris.

Inspect your roof.

Winter weather can be tough on your roof, so it’s important to inspect it for any damage in the springtime. Look for missing or damaged shingles, and check for any signs of leaks or water damage inside your attic. If you’re not comfortable inspecting your roof yourself, please consider hiring a professional to do it for you.

Check your HVAC system.

Your heating and cooling system has likely been working hard all winter, so it’s important to have it inspected and maintained in the springtime. Change your air filters, clean your vents and ducts, and consider having a professional come out to inspect and service your system. We often recommend setting up an automatic order for air filters, that way it’s a built-in reminder that it’s time to change out your filters! It’s recommended that they be changed every three months for the best air quality.

By following these tips and being aware of the status and condition of your home, you can prepare for spring and enjoy the beauty of the season with peace of mind.
